Clinical Risk Manager 4 month contract opportunity that will likely extend and may convert. Work is on site in Santa Barbara, CA. Please note this position requires the successful completion of a background check, drug screen, and employment and education verification prior to starting work. If selected your job will be to minimize risk through the development, planning, coordination, and administration of systematic programs. The right fit for this work plans, organizes, and directs the Risk Management and Patient Safety Program for all corporate entities. Responsible for management of claims and coordination of efforts with corporate counsel, analysis of risk management data for performance improvement initiatives, patient safety initiatives, development of educational programs, support the organization's compliance with JCAHO and other regulatory requirements, all with the objective to promote patient safety and protect organizational assets. This position:
  • Develops, administers, and maintains a program to identify, analyze, and assess risk/loss throughout the organization
  • Develops department goals and objectives and establishes and implements policies and procedures for department operation.
  • Develops and recommends department operating budget and ensures that department operates within budget.
  • Directs the preparation and maintenance of reports.
  • Prepares and presents reports to the Board of Trustees on the Risk Management and Patient Safety Programs.
  • Prepares periodic reports for the Quality and Patient Safety Committee and top management, as required.
  • Ensure appropriate information systems are utilized in the department and that appropriate access to these systems are given to department staff.
  • Provides on-call coverage for Risk Management issues.
  • Analyze and evaluate trends, processes and best practice research in order to provide recommendations to reduce general liability claims experience and enhance patient safety.
  • Analyzes notifications and claims data to identify trends and performance improvement opportunities.
  • Facilitates the Root Cause Analysis and/or Failure Modes and Effects analysis of internal error report recommendations, and utilizes information from external reporting programs e.g., Sentinel Event Alerts, National Patient Safety Goals, Leapfrog.
  • Supports and encourages error reporting throughout the organization through a nonpunitive error reporting system.
  • Participates in the process of disclosure for medical errors.
  • Manages claims against the health system, investigating claims, interfacing with defense
    counsel, and insurance representative.
  • Evaluates the litigation potential of all incidents and adverse outcomes occurring within the hospital in an effort to gain early claim control
  • Development and implementation of policies and procedures for claims management throughout all corporate entities.
  • Serves as a representative of the organization at selected legal proceedings.
  • Communicates with outside contacts such as insurance carriers, brokers, attorneys, and/or federal and state agencies as applicable.
  • Develop, coordinate and participate in the implementation of educational programs to reduce or eliminate potential risks or liabilities and promote patient safety initiatives.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through membership in professional associations, participation in education programs and review of current literature.
Skills: Develop, coordinate and participate in the implementation of educational programs to reduce or eliminate potential risks or liabilities and promote patient safety initiatives. Education: An advanced degree in a health care or a related field is desirable. A Bachelor's degree with appropriate prerequisite knowledge. Experience and skills would also be considered. Preferred: Registered Nurse with Risk Management experience is preferred. Risk management certification.
